Systems Engineer

Location: Chicago or New York

The Opportunity

Group One is looking for a technology generalist to join our Systems team. This role will be a hands-on position, and you will help manage and support all aspects of the firm's server infrastructure, which powers our proprietary trading platform. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to directly impact the servers and technologies that make up our complex distributed system by working collaboratively with our Systems team and our broader technology group.

What We Do

Group One is a proprietary trading firm specializing in market making and liquidity providing strategies in options markets. Our traders provide competitive liquidity across a broad range of securities by managing portfolios of several hundred issues and simultaneously streaming quotes across multiple exchanges. Our systems and network infrastructure are vital in ensuring success.

The Challenge

Our proprietary trading platform consists of an information-dense user interface, on top of a high-throughput, distributed architecture, with interfaces to multiple electronic marketplaces for market data and trading. The electronic trading landscape is constantly evolving, and to continue enhancing our proprietary trading platform, we need talented technologists to help us iterate and innovate our infrastructure. Our system is proprietary, large, and multi-platform, so regardless of your current experience, there will be a lot of learning involved.

The Skill Set

A broad, multi-platform skill set will help you be successful in this role, but there will be plenty of learning opportunities no matter how many of these skills you bring in with you. We also encourage applicants with non-traditional backgrounds to apply.

  • Proficiency with server-class operating systems
    • Using and administering Windows Server technologies including Active Directory, DNS, and Group Policy Management
    • Using and administering GNU/Linux operating systems, preferably RedHat-based distributions
    • Perform systems maintenance which may require occasional after-hours and weekend work as needed; off-hours work is compensated
  • Proficiency with virtualization and cloud technologies
    • Clouding hosting providers, ideally Microsoft Azure
    • On-premise virtualization solutions like Hyper-V or VMware
  • Working knowledge of other DevOps technologies
    • Infrastructure as code tools, like Terraform
    • Configuration management tools, ideally in a mixed-platform environment like Puppet, Ansible, or Salt
    • Git-based version control systems and tools like Bitbucket, GitLab, or GitHub
    • Monitoring frameworks and tools like Telegraf and Prometheus
  • Professional skills
    • Detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal skills
    • An Infrastructure as Code mindset
    • Take ownership of projects and tasks
    • A service-oriented attitude and a willingness to help with troubleshooting problems
    • Create documentation, written processes, and assist with cross-training team members
  • Experience that is nice to have, but not required:
    • ELK Stack, Splunk, or similar centralized log management tools
    • Container technologies like Docker
    • PowerShell usage and scripting
    • Microsoft Azure Certifications

Within 1 Month, You'll

  • Complete your initial orientation, become familiar with our environment, our infrastructure, and our business.
  • Begin a comprehensive, cross-functional training plan to learn more about every aspect of our firm.
  • Learn the roles and skillsets of your teammates on the Systems team to discern and utilize the best advice and information for yourself and others.

Within 3 Months, You'll

  • Understand and provide insight on our existing technical initiatives on the Systems team roadmap.
  • Engage collaboratively on implementing production changes for server, infrastructure, and operating system configuration.
  • Contribute directly to existing projects where your experience is most relevant.

Within 6 Months, You'll

  • Take ownership of technical initiatives from the Systems team roadmap, such as refactoring existing infrastructure, tool improvement projects, or implementing new infrastructure.
  • Contribute to creating and improving aspects of our CI/CD pipeline to manage our fleet of physical and virtual servers.
  • Handle escalations for production and non-production issues from other technology teams like Application Support and Software Development.
